What is dolomite?
Dolomite, also known as dolostone is a sedimentary mineral which is classified as carbonic minerals. This mineral stone is found in all sedimentary areas of the world, especially in European and African countries. Dolomites are carbonate minerals including calcites, organist and dolomites. This stone is a product of sedimentation of minerals such as magnesium oxide and lime. Its chemical formula is CO3 (caMgr), however other oxides like iron sodium and potassium oxides can be found in its structures. This valuable mineral can be found in gray, white and ivory color; however, it also tends to be yellow, green and black. In comparison to other carbonate stone, dolomite has typically higher stiffness ratio and it is more resistant. In addition to the above mentioned properties, we can refer to its acid neutralization process. Carbonate stones are widely used due to their mineral properties and matters. Among carbonate stone, dolomite is a widely used stone. Among carbonate stone, dolomite is a the most widely used.
Dolomitization
These stones are formed in environment with sediments especially in warm shallow sea areas where are rich in calcium deposits, like oysters and corals. Dolomite is formed through of (by reacting) calcite in carbonate sludge or limestone with magnesium in underground water (groundwater). (It is) the presence of magnesium (that) facilitates the process of dolomite formation. It takes place under special (a certain) chemical and time condition.
Carbonate Stone Classification (Classification of Carbonate Stones)
Limestone: this stone has the lowest amount of dolomite and it contains between 3-13% dolomitic limestone.
Dolomite limestone: This stone has a higher amount of dolomite and its percent (percentage of its dolomite) is between 13% to 63%.
Calcite dolomite: it contains 30%-63% dolomite.
Dolomite: it is the purest type and its purity is between 30% to 33%.
